Spying on the Giants: The 13F Tracker

Learn how institutions report. Use the 13F Tracker to read what large managers disclosed in their latest filings.

The first rule of any competition is to know your opponent. In the market, your biggest opponents are institutional investors—hedge funds, pension funds, and asset managers. What if you could read a snapshot of their holdings?

You can. Every quarter, institutional managers with at least $100 million in qualifying US equity assets must publicly disclose those holdings in a Form 13F, within 45 days of quarter end. Our 13F Institutional Tracker is your espionage tool.

Infiltrating the Fortress:

  1. Choose Your Target: Search for a legendary investor like 'Berkshire Hathaway' (Warren Buffett) or 'Scion Asset Management' (Michael Burry).
  2. Intercept the Communiqué: Select their most recent quarterly filing.
  3. Open the Filing Analysis: The tracker's automated Filing analysis reads the filing and compares it with the previous quarter to show what changed:
    • New Incursions: What were their biggest new stock purchases?
    • Reinforcements: Which existing positions did they add to?
    • Strategic Retreats: What stocks did they sell completely?
    • The Commander's Intent: What is the single most important 'Key Takeaway' from their actions?

Reading these filings gives you context beyond the daily news. Remember what they are: a snapshot of US equity holdings at quarter end, published up to 45 days later. They show what a manager held, not why, and not what it holds now. Use them to form questions to test, not to copy. You are now reading the same disclosures the professionals read.
