Advanced Journey: The Master's Path
The Grandmaster Game: Designing Trading Systems
Go from following trades to designing systems. Learn to build and backtest your own rule-based strategies on a demo portfolio in the RoboTrader, which places no orders.
The greatest chess players don't just think one move ahead; they play openings and systems they have studied and perfected. The greatest traders do the same. They remove emotion and replace it with a defined, repeatable system. The RoboTrader is your chessboard for designing and testing these systems on a demo portfolio; it places no orders.
From Idea to Algorithm:
A strategy is simply a set of "if-then" rules.
- Entry Rule (When It Enters):
IFthe 20-day moving average crosses above the 50-day moving average,THENthe strategy enters a position. - Exit Rule (When It Exits):
IFthe 20-day moving average crosses back below the 50-day moving average,THENthe strategy exits.
A note on RSI: An RSI above 70 means "overbought": price has risen quickly relative to recent losses. That is a condition, not a sell signal. In a strong uptrend RSI can stay above 70 for long stretches, so use it as context for your rules, not an automatic exit.
The Crucible of Backtesting:
A system is only a theory until it is tested. The Run Backtest button is your crucible. It takes your strategy and rigorously tests it against historical data, revealing its strengths and fatal flaws without risking a single dollar. A backtest describes the past, so treat it as evidence about a rule, not a forecast.
The Automated Sparring Partner:
Furthermore, the automated Strategy Analysis acts as your sparring partner. It will:
- Name Your Gambit: It gives your strategy a descriptive name like 'Momentum Crossover Rider'.
- Critique Your Moves: It analyzes the logic, highlighting where it would excel and where it would fail.
- Offer a Better Move: It provides a single suggestion for improvement, like "Consider adding a volume filter to avoid false signals in choppy markets."
This is the path to systematic, emotionless trading. This is how you play the grandmaster's game.
